Last Time For Everything Sara Milonovich Don’t remember much the day I heard the news Just stared out at the sky, it was the color of a bruise No way to anticipate the ambush by your eyes Blending with the underbrush, coiled up to strike Coiled up to strike Still looking for what’s good about goodbyes Like staring at the moonlit snow, and saying it’s fireflies Windblown with the sparrows clutching the wire I’d run off to LA, but it just keeps catching fire Catching fire If only time was like a river that runs both ways A tide that could deliver back those days You were a storm front making grown men cry, watching young girls sing But there’s a last time for everything Pressed between these pages in our hands A crumbling yellow leaf, the way you used to stand Gathered ‘round like crows circling for home Bewildered wild creatures not understanding where you’ve gone Or why you’ve gone The radiator exhales into the morning Scrape the ice off the windshield, smell the frozen wood burning Pray the blue ghosts of trees will summon back the spring Try to keep the faith, but there’s a last time for everything If only time was like a river that runs both ways A tide that could deliver back those days Another song, another drink, another sunset’s glowing ring But there’s a last time for everything There’s a last time for everything

Lawrence, KS 04:15
Lawrence, KS Josh Ritter Dirt roads and dry land farming might be the death of me But I can't leave this world behind My debts are not like prison where there's hope of getting free But I can't leave this world behind I've been from here to Lawrence, Kansas Trying to leave my state of mind Trying to leave this awful sadness But I can't leave this world behind South of Delia there's a patch out back by the willow trees And I can't leave this world behind It's a fenced-in piece of nothing where I hear voices on my knees And I can't leave this world behind Some prophecies are self-fulfilling (But) I've had to work for all of mine Better times will come to me, god willing ‘Cause I can't leave this world behind This world must be frightening everybody's on the run Seems I can't leave this world behind My house is a wooden one and its built on a wooden one Seems I can't leave this world behind Preacher says when the master calls us He's gonna give us wings to fly My wings are made of hay and corn husks So I can't leave this world behind

Valentine’s Day Sara Milonovich It’s Valentine’s Day; another massacre to put away And crying doesn’t do a goddamn thing to make it better I used to think love always wins - guess I better think again ‘Cause praying for a different ending never matters I can’t believe that you’re not bored, that we’re still comrades in this war 15 years… god knows how many more we’ll weather Not banking on the by and by, it’s back-to-back against the tide Shaking both fists at the sky, over and over Like those flowers we’re all sending Some things there’s just no way to save Like every second that’s worth spending Picking roses for a table or a grave Just look at our friends - they’ve run out of road together in the end With nothing left to learn, and nothing left to lose She dragged the couch out in the yard, he helped her load it in the car And if one day it was our turn, I’d do the same for you Like those flowers we’re all sending Some things there’s just no way to save Like every second that’s worth spending Picking roses for a table or a grave We’d have a daughter if we could - I bet she’d have had your looks Days like today I’m glad that we’ll never know With her eyes of hazel wood, and her arms full of books She’d go smiling off to school, and never come home

Queen Of Suburbia Sara Milonovich I got drunk with the Queen of Suburbia, 30 miles from our threadbare hometown The big city lights might’ve hurt you, but it sure beats that hole in the ground Hey honey, how’s life with you these days? Did you figure it out on the way? How’s the view through the eyes of your two kids, and those bottles of chardonnay? Hey, Hey, Hey - ain’t it funny how life comes around? Do we settle on something to live for or just settle down? When we reminisced back on our childhood, you’d have thought we were living in war As we tried not to die from the boredom of figuring out what we’re good for Remember just after the first frost we played hide and seek in the corn And everyone thought we were lost ‘til we came in at last to get warm Hey, Hey, Hey - ain’t it funny how life comes around? Do we settle on something to live for or just settle down? Now it’s been a few years since we’ve spoken, guess there’s not much we needed to say And I see by the pictures you posted, your second one’s makin’ her way Let’s head up and settle our bar tab, and study ourselves in the glass And wonder how life would’ve turned out, if we’d each chosen each other’s path Hey, Hey, Hey - ain’t it funny how life comes around? Do we settle on something to live for or just settle down? Hey, Hey, Hey - are we happy with all that we found? Looking back at the road not taken for tracks on the ground. How I wish that I wanted what you’ve got, quiet chores and a nice cozy bed Instead of stalking these highways and alleys, with these dreams bleeding out in my head

The Sun's Comin' Over The Hill Karine Polwart Six rain ridden summers, and he still had an eye for me Every evening he kissed me, and told me he'd die for me And then he ran off the road, full of whisky and irony He always meant what he said So I took to whisky so I could recall The taste of his mouth on my mouth, that was all I tried the same trick with a truck, but it stalled The engine was better off dead Oh the nights are long But life is longer still Oh the nights are long But the sun's comin' over the hill The taste never left me and I don't think it will And it caused me to supplement whisky with pills But there was something inside that I couldn't kill Believe me when I say I tried And there's some say you get what you deserve but they're wrong Sometimes you get what you're given, and then it's all gone And you are lucky if you are sufficiently strong To daily decide not to die Oh the nights are long But life is longer still Oh the nights are long But the sun's comin' over the hill And there's not many things that I wouldn't change There are better days gone than those that remain But I can find joy in the sound of the rain You have to find joy where you can Oh the nights are long But life is longer still Oh the nights are long But the sun's comin' over the hill

87 North 04:50
87 North Sara Milonovich 87 North in the driving rain in the spray of a semi bound for Montreal I’ve buried a few friends and a couple dreams, got the headstones just waiting on the ground to thaw The first time I tried to outrun sorrow I was 16, passport in my glovebox On a North Country road towards tomorrow; thought I knew about nostalgia and hard knocks There are better things to pick a fight with than the deaf, drunken ghosts inside your head Because one day you’ll wake up to find out that the life of the party is dead So I turned tail for the timberline, past the old barns and the older pines It’s a funny way that time chooses to unwind Well the road might outlive you, but the one thing that it won’t do is forgive you You’re still a dollar from breaking even, a mile from breaking down It’s just the current of least resistance, just like trying to chase lighting from a distance Might as well forgive yourself if you’re gonna stick around Met the cowboy prophet of the corner store grabbing coffee just before the border He told me “Those that can afford the time to think don’t seem to end up any smarter. Too many self-made saints charging by the hour just to sell you the sunset for a song But we’re not here like fragile wildflowers, we’re fragile like a bomb.” “Those already born in paradise wouldn’t recognize redemption if they saw it The winters ain’t what they used to be, but they’re still caught up in what to call it Just remember the courage it takes to run somewhere they don’t see silence as a threat Because the past is prison ‘neath a foreign sun, and the highway hasn’t quite failed me yet.” Well the road might outlive you, but the one thing that it won’t do is forgive you You’re still a dollar from breaking even, a mile from breaking down It’s just the current of least resistance, just like trying to chase lighting from a distance Might as well forgive yourself if you’re gonna stick around

The Body Electric Alynda Lee Segarra Said you're gonna shoot me down, put my body in the river Shoot me down, put my body in the river While the whole world sings, sing it like a song The whole world sings like there's nothing going wrong He shot her down, he put her body in the river He covered her up but I went to get her And I said, "My girl, what happened to you now?" I said, "My girl, we gotta stop it somehow" Oh, and tell me what's a man with a rifle in his hand Gonna do for a world that's so sick and sad? Tell me what's a man with a rifle in his hand Gonna do for a world that's all gone mad? He's gonna shoot me down, put my body in the river Cover me up with the leaves of September Like an old sad song, you’ve heard it all before Well, Delia's gone but I'm settling the score Oh, and tell me what's a man with a rifle in his hand Gonna do for a world that's just dying slow? Tell me what's a man with a rifle in his hand Gonna do for his daughter when it's her turn to go?

Two Dollar Town Sara Milonovich Got a million-dollar view of a two-dollar town The streets are safe at midnight ‘cause there’s no one else around Days crawl by like weeds taking over in the hollows At summer’s end the children fly away with the swallows Is it a long time gone? Can you ever go home? Smoky old red diesel, and days too long to measure Fine dust in the driveway, always talking about the weather Breathin’ in the evening dew settling on the windrows Silent at the sunset, don’t waste words on what you know It wasn’t that long ago; wonder who’s next to go We all gotta pick a hill to die on A mountaintop to make a stand Rows of clay you can rely on Or a paper tombstone in your hand The lights were still on in the dairy barn They found him in his Ford with a needle in his arm I wish I’d thought to ask him if his war was ever won He never talked about it even when the chores were done We’re all fault lines; we’re all dying all the time Maybe there’s mercy in no decision left to make The last line that you sign on is still the deepest cut to take Surrender your kingdom to a stranger in the fall Who stares out at the cornfields and sees nothing there at all This is the season of tall grass; but like all things must pass We all gotta pick a hill to die on A hill of sand or a hill of corn But if you want to get away with murder Just make a killin’ a million times more Now I always get a heartache driving past the headlands Listening to the radio instead of the rain I wish those golden fields hadn’t flown away so far I’d trap all those glowing nights safely in a glass jar
9.
Strange Dominions Jeff Wilkinson / Sara Milonovich Strange dominions, for a few Lost republic, what’s come over you? Feed the fire, coal’s aglow Tramp the wheat fields ‘cause I know Strange reflections, on the sea Dancing like a sailor, what’s come over me? Feed the flame, burning appetite Cast our nets just one more time But you can’t begin to claim the life You say is yours to sell and buy The winds are heavy beyond control To unleash a power far beyond our reach Strange desires, ‘neath the sand Hidden river wanders through our hands Feed the fire like it’s suicide Pray to the powers up on high ‘Cause you can’t begin to claim the life You say is yours to sell and buy The winds are heavy beyond control To unleash a power far beyond our reach Strange possession that you take Claim to choose for me the life I make Feed the fire, hypocrites on high Take away my last right to decide ‘Cause you can’t pretend to claim the life You say is yours to sell and buy The winds are heavy beyond control To unleash a power far beyond our reach Strange dominions, what’s come over you? Who controls the bounty for the few? Feed the flames that rise in to the sky Heavy hand upon our backs and minds

Northeast 04:43
Northeast Sara Milonovich The wind is too damn lazy to go around It steals your hope of ever getting warm(er) It taught the telephone wires to sing the loneliest songs And I still hold my breath around every corner Cause tomorrow spring might still be lost Stuck in a ditch next to a dirty plywood cross With the beer cans and best laid plans and barbed wire skeletons of dreams In the Northeast The stop sign’s creased from where the snowplow hit And the city glitters like a shot glass in the sun At night the stars are sharp as diamond drill bits You can forget for a while about the dead and dumb Went from living the dream to just living The hardest part of being broke is the pretending When November plants cold boots upon your shoulders it doesn’t scare you in the least In the Northeast It’s hard to tell which is heavier - the concrete sky or this tiny town You wonder why I say I’m like the weather: As unforgiving as the January ground My smile is still an echo of the ridgeline You won’t recognize these hills in any song A folded map that’s worn away with time But it’s as good a place as any to be from Even when every day’s a bluebird sky You don’t always do things the hard way but you try You can’t escape the boulders surfacing in spring, or this rusty rage you’ve been bequeathed In the Northeast
